The US Navy has recently concluded its first deployment of the Next Generation Jammer (NGJ) on VAQ-133 Wizards Boeing EA-18G Growlers. Meanwhile, the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) is working towards accepting NGJ kits. The NGJ employs active electronically scanned arrays (AESA) to emit electronic energy, blinding radars and blocking radio frequency communications. It is designed with an open system architecture for flexible use and mounting.

Barron Stone, a US Air Force veteran and electrical engineer, explains that jammers can send radio signals to block a radar's ability to detect its own signal or misdirect it from reality. Chuck Angus, RTX Requirements Director for Electronic Attack, elaborates on the goal: "What we're trying to do is to deny that adversary the ability to detect one of our strike packages so that we can get in close, drop our weapons, hit those targets, and then get out right before... you're detected."

Jamming also protects long-range weapons like the J-SOW glide bomb or cruise missiles by conserving expensive missiles and providing more 'magazine depth' to allied forces. John Ghosh from L3Harris Technologies highlights low-band jamming's role against lower frequency detection systems: "Some threats employ using lower frequency detection systems... but it can be good enough to employ a long-distance weapon with its own terminal guidance."

Raytheon's NGJ solution addresses mid-band jamming for most radars and recently won an engineering development award for expanding the frequency range towards high band with the NGJ Mid-Band Expansion (NGJ-MBX). Raytheon will produce at least 36 shipsets for the US Navy and RAAF following a recent contract award.

The NGJ generates electricity from its ram-air turbine to power AESA arrays for jamming signals. This independent electricity source enhances AESA power while preserving aircraft power needs. A key improvement over previous ALQ-99 pods is electronic beam steering via AESA versus mechanical steering.

Angus states: "Growlers going to be around for a while... NGJ makes not only the fourth-gen [fighters] more survivable but certainly more lethal." The NGJ offers more jamming power through onboard turbines, open architecture for continuous improvement, AESA array steering instead of mechanical methods, and automatic assignment changes as platforms turn.

Boeing is exploring integrating EA-18G jamming capabilities into F-15EX platforms. Rob Novotny from Boeing notes: "We are in the nascent stage of exploring... this platform would lead the way into the next decade or two." Angus mentions that NGJs could also be mounted on maritime patrol aircraft and bombers.

The bottom line emphasizes that NGJ, particularly NGJ-MBX, will support US Navy and RAAF operations. Angus describes it as "a very high-powered truck" capable of disrupting enemy detection across various targets.
