Iberia, a subsidiary of International Airlines Group (IAG), has announced the suspension of its Airbus A321XLR winter flights between Madrid and Washington Dulles International Airport. This decision comes after the airline recently operated the world's first A321XLR flight.

The route from Madrid Barajas International Airport to Washington Dulles will be paused for the winter schedule, with services set to resume in early March 2025. Cirium data shows that Iberia plans to operate 14 flights to Washington in March and increase this number to 26 flights in April.

During the first quarter of 2025, no airlines will serve this market directly, leaving travelers with only connecting flight options from Madrid to Washington. According to Enrilia, an independent route analyst, "Washington, DC, is not a top leisure destination during the winter months," and business travel typically slows down during this period.

Currently, there are 18 airlines offering direct flights between Europe and Washington. Some operate year-round while others have seasonal schedules. Italy's ITA Airways has also suspended its winter schedule between Rome Fiumicino International Airport and Washington Dulles, planning to resume service in March 2025.

International Airlines Group ordered 14 Airbus A321XLRs in 2019 for Iberia and Aer Lingus. Seven more aircraft are expected by early 2026. The new A321XLR can seat up to 182 passengers across two classes and offers significant range improvements over previous models.

Iberia aims to expand its long-haul network with a focus on America using its new aircraft. The airline initially considered introducing the A321XLR on the Washington route but chose Boston Logan International Airport for its first transatlantic flight instead.

Iberia maintains a strong presence in the US market with an extensive fleet primarily consisting of widebody aircraft like Airbus A330-200s and A350-900s. Its US destinations include Los Angeles, Dallas Fort Worth, Chicago O'Hare, New York JFK, Boston Logan, San Francisco International Airport (seasonal), and Miami International Airport.

As per ch-aviation data, Iberia operates a fleet of 51 widebody aircraft including Airbus A330s and A350s.
