India's aviation authorities have implemented new regulations for hand luggage to improve security and streamline the travel experience. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) have introduced stricter rules that limit passengers to one piece of hand luggage for both domestic and international flights.

Economy and premium economy travelers can carry up to 7 kg, while business and first-class passengers are allowed up to 10 kg. Carry-on bags must adhere to specific dimensions: height of 55 cm, length of 40 cm, and width of 20 cm.

Some passengers with tickets booked before May 4, 2024, are exempt from these restrictions. They can carry slightly heavier bags—up to 8 kg in economy, 10 kg in premium economy, and 12 kg in business and first class.

The BCAS, originally part of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), now functions independently under the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Its responsibilities include setting aviation security standards, monitoring rule implementation, training personnel, coordinating security efforts, conducting surprise checks, and organizing mock exercises.

The new baggage rules coincide with a significant rise in domestic air travel in India. In November alone, Indian airlines transported 14.2 million passengers domestically—a 12% increase from the previous year. IndiGo remains the leading airline with over 60% market share, followed by Air India at around 25%.

The Indian aviation sector is poised for growth in 2025 as airlines like IndiGo and Air India plan fleet upgrades and network expansions.
