Brussels Airlines is set to expand its Airbus A320neo fleet with the addition of three new aircraft by the summer of 2026. This move will increase the airline's total number of A320neos from five to eight. The additional aircraft will replace older models, specifically the Airbus A319s, which have an average age of 19.8 years.

The introduction of these new planes is part of Brussels Airlines' strategy to modernize its fleet and improve capacity on short-haul routes. The airline plans for two of the new A320neos to replace existing A319s, while the third will be used for expansion purposes. Each A320neo can accommodate 180 passengers, compared to 141 seats in the A319.

Dorothea von Boxberg, CEO of Brussels Airlines, highlighted several benefits: "Being able to add extra brand-new aircraft is a win-win-win: by replacing older aircraft by the most fuel-efficient aircraft on the market, we reduce our impact on the environment. We are also growing our fleet, which creates extra jobs and improves connectivity for Belgium."

Since becoming part of Lufthansa Group in 2018, Brussels Airlines has been working towards financial sustainability and operational efficiency. The acquisition of new planes reflects this progress: "Brussels Airlines has reached a cost-base that allows the company to be profitable in a sustainable way. This allows the Belgian airline to invest in its future," stated Brussels Airlines.

These new additions are expected during "the first six months of 2026," although this timeline may be affected by potential supply chain delays. The newer models promise up to 20% savings in CO2 emissions and offer enhanced passenger experiences with improved cabin features.

In terms of network operations, current schedules indicate that A320neos serve various destinations including London Heathrow, Madrid Barajas, Tenerife, Frankfurt, Lyon, and Berlin.

Looking ahead at fleet strategy adjustments, Brussels Airlines has acknowledged that it needs to address how it will replace its aging A319s: “Well...the question is how do we follow up on that? With which aircraft? How will it exactly work?” said von Boxberg.

In line with these changes, Brussels Airlines has agreed with airBaltic to integrate several Airbus A220s into its operations starting in 2025 for regional routes or those with lower demand.
