The 97th Air Mobility Wing, based at Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma, plays a crucial role in the United States Air Force's strategic airlift operations. The unit supports all branches of the US armed forces with missions that include aerial refueling, aeromedical evacuation, and humanitarian relief flights.

The base houses a fleet of aircraft such as the KC-135 and KC-46 tankers and the C-17 cargo plane. The wing is committed to providing exceptional air mobility support globally. Its history dates back to September 11, 1947, when it was established as the 97th Bombardment Wing. Over time, it has evolved from flying Boeing B-29 Superfortress bombers to its current focus on air mobility.

The wing was reorganized in 1992 to operate aircraft like the C-5 Galaxy and KC-135 Stratotanker. According to the McChord Air Museum, "the 97th has consistently demonstrated excellence in air mobility," contributing significantly to global operations.

Today, while no longer operating the C-5 Galaxy, they have integrated new technology with aircraft like the KC-46A Pegasus tanker from Boeing. This platform enhances their capabilities through a flexible multi-mission approach.

At Altus AFB, "We Train Exceptional Mobility Airmen" is a key mission statement for the 97th AMW. They train over 2,000 students annually from various nations and aim to forge proficient mobility warriors who deliver airpower for America and its allies.

The wing's responsibilities include delivering troops and supplies worldwide and supporting disaster response efforts by evacuating refugees or casualties. Their aerial refueling capability ensures US tactical aircraft can respond promptly wherever needed.

Altus AFB serves as a hub for military personnel and their families, strengthening community ties through economic contributions and outreach programs. The wing also engages in joint operations with other military branches and allied nations.

"The legacy of the 97th Air Mobility Wing is not only defined by its track record of mission success but also by its enduring role in the broader mission of the US Air Force."
