William P. Hobby Airport, known as Houston Hobby, has reopened Runway 4-22 following a closure for maintenance that began in May. The runway was made operational again on December 23, just ahead of the Christmas travel rush. This reopening is part of a larger multi-phase project aimed at modernizing the airport's infrastructure.

The project includes updates to runway and taxiway intersections to meet modern FAA standards, with enhancements such as changes to takeoff or landing directions and LED lighting installations for improved visibility and energy efficiency. The removal of the non-standard intersection between Runway 4-22 and Taxiway K1 was completed before the reopening.

"The reopening of Runway 4-22, just as the December holiday travel season reaches its peak, is a testament to the teamwork between Houston Airports and the FAA to modernize and enhance the airfield at Houston’s first commercial airport," said Jim Szczesniak, director of aviation for the Houston Airport System.

This effort is funded by over $40 million in Airport Improvement Program grants from the FAA. These funds are also intended for reconstructing taxiways and removing Runway 17-35 to eliminate runway incursion hotspots.

Houston Hobby is one of three airports managed by the Houston Airport System, alongside George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Ellington Airport/Houston Spaceport. Southwest Airlines operates heavily out of Hobby, accounting for approximately 93% of its passenger traffic.

In addition to its role in domestic flights, Hobby serves some international routes to the Caribbean region. It holds a unique distinction as Texas' only 5-Star-rated airport according to Skytrax World Airport Star Rating for 2022.

Looking forward, further construction work will commence in 2025 on Runway 13R-31L as part of ongoing modernization efforts at Houston Hobby.
