Theft during flights has become a growing concern, with many travelers opting to carry their valuables in the cabin due to increased costs and unreliability of checked baggage. Phones, money, passports, electronics, and laptops are common items found in hand luggage.

To mitigate the risk of theft, experts recommend several precautionary measures. Travelers should keep their valuables in hand luggage or on their person. Ensuring bags are well-packed and equipped with locks can add an extra layer of security. Additionally, staying vigilant and keeping belongings in sight is advised. Considering travel insurance options is also recommended for added protection.

Statistics on inflight theft remain sparse compared to other issues like lost baggage. However, reports indicate a rise in such incidents post-pandemic. Notably, there has been a significant increase in reported cases in Asia over recent years. Simple Flying noted that "incidents of theft have increased significantly in 2024." In Japan specifically, there has been an alarming rise in thefts involving money being replaced with lower-value foreign currency to disguise the crime.

Efforts are underway to address this issue. Hong Kong police have joined forces with airlines and airports to combat inflight crime. The Hong Kong Security Bureau reported 169 inflight theft cases totaling HK$4.32 million (approximately $552,000) over the first ten months of 2024. These incidents were predominantly concentrated on regional flights within South and Southeast Asia.

Travelers are encouraged to take precautions such as using sturdy bags with locks and marking them for easy identification. Keeping bags within sight at all times is crucial both at the airport and onboard flights.

Remaining aware of one's surroundings is essential as well. This includes paying attention to those nearby and avoiding leaving belongings unattended. If anything suspicious is observed, alerting security personnel or flight attendants is advised.

For additional peace of mind, having appropriate travel insurance coverage can be beneficial. Coverage for personal items varies between insurers and policies; therefore, it is important for travelers to review their policy details carefully.
