Israel has provided a rare insight into its Boeing 707 "Re'em" refueling aircraft, showcasing the remote vision system (RVS) utilized by the refueling boom operator. This system enables operators to remotely view the rear of the plane while guiding the boom for midair fuel transfer.

The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) released a video detailing more about the Israeli Air Force (IAF) 707's RVS. The system is primarily analog due to the age of the 707 and includes foot-operated communications, allowing operators to communicate hands-free during operations.

The RVS is supported by two large cameras located in the tail of the aircraft. Similar to the United States' KC-46 Pegasus platform, operators use 3D goggles with a dual 2D/3D design. The video also revealed removable fuel tanks in the hold, which can be replaced with seats for passenger transport if needed.

Previously, Israel shared limited information about its refuelers but released footage last summer showing a long-range strike mission against Houthi rebels in Yemen, featuring brief clips of a 707 tanker refueling Israel's F-35 fleet midair.

As these tankers near retirement, Israel plans to replace them with KC-46 Pegasus aircraft. In 2021, Israel confirmed an order for two initial KC-46 tankers and aims to acquire up to eight airframes eventually.

Israel's current fleet of seven operational "Re'em" tankers has been in service since 1978. Alongside their refueling role, these aircraft serve as transport planes and command stations equipped with communication suites.

The KC-46 Pegasus faces challenges with its own remote vision system due to issues adapting to sun and shadows. A reworked 'RVS 2.0' is under development but is delayed until at least 2026.
