The United States Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, has expressed concerns about Boeing's ongoing efforts to address cultural and operational deficiencies. In an interview with Reuters, Buttigieg stated that the aircraft manufacturer still has "much more to do" to improve its culture and ensure the quality and safety of its products.

Buttigieg emphasized that a comprehensive evaluation of Boeing's progress would be possible only when consistent improvements are evident across all production sites. However, his tenure is nearing its end as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office on January 20. Trump has nominated former Representative Sean Duffy to succeed Buttigieg as the head of the Department of Transportation (DOT).

Duffy, who previously served in Congress until 2019 and was involved with the House Committee on Financial Services, awaits Senate confirmation. Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas and incoming chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, aims to confirm Duffy in early January.

Airlines for America (A4A), representing major US carriers, congratulated Duffy in November 2024 and expressed eagerness to collaborate with him. A4A emphasized their commitment to maintaining aviation safety while addressing challenges such as air traffic controller shortages.

The Regional Airline Association (RAA) also praised Duffy's leadership qualities. Faye Malarkey Black, CEO of RAA, highlighted the importance of reliable air service for economic vitality in small communities.

As Duffy prepares for his potential role at DOT, questions remain about how he will handle issues within aviation and aerospace sectors like Boeing. A Congressional staffer mentioned uncertainty regarding Duffy's approach toward these industries.

Some airline executives anticipate a business-friendly environment under Trump's administration. Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian welcomed this shift but faced criticism from Buttigieg over claims of regulatory overreach during Biden's presidency. Buttigieg defended passenger protection measures implemented during his tenure.
