A Ukrainian F-16 pilot has reportedly set a new record by downing six Russian cruise missiles in a single mission, despite the aircraft being equipped with only four air-to-air missiles. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, two of these cruise missiles were destroyed using the aircraft's cannon. This claim highlights the role of F-16s in Ukraine's air defense operations.

The incident allegedly occurred on December 13, 2024, when Russia launched nearly 200 drones and 94 missiles. The Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat commented on this feat, stating that "even Americans couldn't believe you did it." However, it is important to note that such claims are difficult to independently verify during ongoing conflicts.

Yurii Ihnat explained that the F-16 was carrying two medium-range and two short-range air-to-air missiles, likely AIM-120 AMRAAM and AIM-9 Sidewinder. The pilot recounted how he engaged and successfully hit all enemy missiles: "I flew up to the second pair, locked on to the missiles... The first missile hit the target, and the second one did too!"

After depleting his missile supply, the pilot resorted to using his aircraft's cannon against the remaining targets. He recalled following his training from US instructors: "A few rounds from the cannon – and an explosion… then another!" This tactic proved effective as two more cruise missiles were taken down.

This engagement suggests that autocannons on fighter jets remain relevant. The F-16 Fighting Falcon carries an M61A1 Vulcan 6-barrel rotary cannon with 511 rounds. In contrast, newer models like the F-35B and F-35C lack internal cannons but can be equipped with external gun pods.

In related developments, Western fighter jets have begun arriving in Ukraine since August 2024. Ukraine has received batches of F-16 Fighting Falcons from European allies such as Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, Belgium, and possibly Greece. However, none have come from the United States. Training pilots for these aircraft remains a significant challenge for Ukraine.

Ukraine is expected to receive around 100 F-16s by 2028. Meanwhile, France is anticipated to deliver three Mirage 2000-5F fighter jets this month out of a planned ten.
