Naval Air Station North Island, located on Coronado Island, holds a significant place in military history as the birthplace of American naval aviation. Established in 1917 and originally known as Naval Air Station San Diego until 1955, it has been pivotal in the development of air power for the US Navy.

The base is renowned for training early aviators such as Lieutenant Ellyson and his peers. It covers over two thousand acres and has played a crucial role in pioneering flights, modern carrier operations, pilot development, and air warfare tactics.

According to NAS North Island's homepage: “Forefathers of today's "Blue Angels", the three-plane "Sea Hawks" of VF-6B, the "Felix the Cat" squadron, were thrilling audiences with flight demonstrations as early as 1928. They demonstrated the training skills of Navy fighter and bomber pilots and on many occasions, even flew their aircraft in formation with the wings tethered together.”

The station is currently home to Helicopter Sea Combat Wing Pacific and Fleet Logistics Support Squadrons. The transition from Grumman C-2 Greyhound to Bell-Boeing CMV-22B Osprey marks its continuous modernization efforts. Its strategic location offers ideal conditions for flying activities due to favorable climate and geography.

NAS North Island has seen various historic test flights and squadron formations. Its significance extends back to when aviation was still emerging. Early aircraft carrier designs were developed here with units benefiting from year-round practice conditions for carrier landings and maneuvers.

During World War II, NAS North Island expanded significantly alongside San Diego's growth. Land reclamation increased space for infrastructure needed by new classes of aircraft which bolstered national defense capabilities.

Established in 1997, Naval Base Coronado (NBC) comprises eight facilities including NAS North Island among others like Naval Amphibious Base Coronado and Silver Strand Training Complex. These installations cover more than 57,000 acres employing over 36,000 personnel making NBC a major command within the Southwest Region.

Modernization at NAS North Island includes upgrades to runways, control systems, hangars, training centers and barracks supporting various missions like intelligence gathering or fleet logistics reflecting its enduring role within naval aviation community today.
