Mayo Clinic Fairmont nurses vote out Minnesota Nurses Association

Nurses at Mayo Clinic's Fairmont Medical Center have voted to remove the Minnesota Nurses Association (MNA) union from their facility. The vote, which ended with a 26-15 result, was led by employee Jamie Campbell. In December 2024, Campbell submitted a petition to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) for a union decertification vote.

The NLRB is tasked with enforcing federal labor laws and overseeing elections related to union certification and decertification. Campbell's petition exceeded the required number of signatures needed for such a vote under NLRB regulations. The voting group included all registered general duty nurses and charge nurses.

Minnesota does not have Right to Work protections for private sector workers, allowing MNA officials to mandate that Fairmont Mayo nurses pay part of the union dues as an employment condition. In Right to Work states, however, union membership and financial support are voluntary. Regardless of state laws, unions can impose contracts on all employees in a work unit.

If the NLRB certifies the vote results, Fairmont Mayo nurses will no longer be subject to forced dues or monopoly bargaining by the MNA union. "The MNA was a very divisive force in our workplace," said Campbell. "We hope the NLRB quickly certifies the vote and that union officials respect our decision."

This move follows similar actions by healthcare professionals across Minnesota since 2022. Several groups have sought legal aid to hold removal votes against MNA and other unions successfully. For instance, workers at Mayo Clinic’s Mankato branch ousted both MNA and AFSCME Local 1856 between 2022 and 2023.

Mark Mix, President of the National Right to Work Foundation, commented on this trend: “MNA union bosses’ influence did not shield them from suffering another defeat by rank-and-file nurses at the ballot box.” He noted that Minnesota's lack of Right to Work protections might have reduced accountability between MNA officials and the nurses they represent.
