Reports have emerged of an incident involving an Alaska Airlines jet at Anchorage Airport, where a Boeing 737-900ER skidded off the taxiway and ended up in a ditch. Fortunately, the aircraft was empty at the time.

On January 8, the plane was being moved to a parking spot at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport when it veered off course. Two mechanics were handling the aircraft during this incident. No injuries were reported.

Shannon McCarthy, communications director for the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, noted that the incident did not disrupt normal airport operations. She described it as minor, stating, "These kinds of incidents do happen from time to time, this is what we would consider a stage one — or level one — incident."

There was speculation about icy conditions contributing to the mishap; however, McCarthy clarified that ice was not a factor. Images online show no damage to the fuselage but visible damage to the nose landing gear. Alaska Airlines is working with authorities to investigate further.

The involved aircraft, registered as N215AK, was delivered to Alaska Airlines in March 2019 and has accumulated over 19,000 flight hours across nearly 700 cycles. It had arrived in Anchorage from Seattle–Tacoma International Airport as flight AS143 before completing other routes.

Alaska Airlines operates an all-Boeing 737 fleet with 79 Boeing 737-900ERs, of which 77 are active.

In recent months, similar incidents have occurred elsewhere. An American Eagle Embraer ERJ-145 slid off a taxiway amid a snowstorm in Traverse City last month without injuries. In December 2024, an Allied Air Cargo freighter overran a runway in Abuja due to landing gear failure. Additionally, a United Airlines Boeing 737 MAX experienced runway issues while landing between Memphis and Houston last year.
