Bill Carroll, S.V.P. – Controller | Delta Air Lines

Delta Air Lines faced significant disruptions at its Atlanta hub on January 10, 2025, as winter weather conditions led to the temporary closure of all runways. The airline canceled approximately 800 flights on that day due to the adverse weather, impacting Delta and Delta Connection services. In response to the forecasted storm, Delta had previously issued a fare-difference waiver on January 8, allowing customers to adjust their travel plans.

Efforts are underway at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to clear snow, ice, and sleet from runways and taxiways. Delta's teams are also focused on deicing aircraft to resume operations safely. Similar recovery activities are occurring across other airports in the Southeast region.

"The safety of Delta customers and employees is our primary focus as we manage disruptions to our operation," stated a Delta spokesperson.

To assist affected travelers, Delta has waived bag fees for up to three checked bags for flights between January 10 and January 11:59 p.m. local time on January 11, excluding flights departing from Amsterdam (AMS), which are handled by KLM. Refunds will be provided for bag fees already paid during this period.

Delta has extended flexibility for customers with existing bookings in certain Southeastern U.S. cities, allowing changes or cancellations ahead of the storm. The airline will rebook passengers on available itineraries if a flight is canceled or delayed.

Delta encourages passengers to monitor flight statuses via delta.com or the Fly Delta app. Updates can be sent directly to mobile devices or email addresses. Customers have options if flights are significantly delayed or canceled, including rebooking through the app or website.

For domestic delays over three hours or international delays over six hours where customers choose not to fly, full refunds for unflown portions of tickets will be offered. Automatic refunds will be processed after a cancellation if no alternative arrangements are made within 24 hours.

Passengers experiencing cancellations should contact Delta promptly for rebooking assistance through airport representatives or the Reservations team via phone or the Fly Delta app's messaging service.

Further details about flight disruptions and customer options can be found on delta.com.
