A complaint has been filed with the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) by a consumer who experienced issues during a flight with Qatar Airways. The consumer is urging the DOT to suspend codeshare services between American Airlines and Qatar Airways, citing alleged malpractice by the latter.

The incident in question occurred after the complainant booked a flight for their child on March 29, 2024, using a combination of AAdvantage miles and cash through American Airlines. The flight was scheduled for May 24, 2024. According to the complaint, seats were initially selected on Qatar Airways' website without any fees being charged, confirmed via email as costing €0.

On the day of travel, however, the child was reportedly informed that an additional fee of €150 ($156 at that time) would be required for checked baggage and selected seats. This refusal prompted accusations from the complainant against Qatar Airways for "unfair and deceptive trade practices."

During an attempt to resolve this at an airport counter, it was reported that airline staff insisted on payment unless waived through unspecified calls. Eventually, a reduced fee of €51.95 ($54.09) was paid at another counter to proceed with check-in.

The complaint also highlighted regulatory provisions which prohibit airlines from misrepresenting fares or increasing prices post-purchase. It further accused Qatar Airways of not honoring valid boarding passes and requested suspension of its codeshare authority with American Airlines.

These measures are deemed "pragmatic" and necessary within DOT's statutory authority according to the complainant, who believes they would encourage compliance with US consumer protection laws by both carriers involved.
