In March 2019, an Amtrak traveler earned points during a journey from Portland, Oregon, to Chicago. Since then, the traveler had not used Amtrak services and recently received a notification from AwardWallet indicating that these points were set to expire on April 6.

Amtrak's terms state that points will not expire as long as the account is active within a 24-month period. The definition of "active" involves earning or redeeming points within this timeframe. Without any qualifying activity in two years, the points will expire.

To determine when their Amtrak points would expire, users must navigate through their accounts since expiration dates are not directly visible. By accessing the "My transactions" section and adjusting search parameters to cover a 24-month period before the current date, travelers can ascertain their point status.

The traveler noted their most recent activity was canceling an award booking on April 5, 2023. This meant without further action, their points would lapse on April 6 after two years of inactivity.

Several options exist to keep an account active: earning or redeeming points for travel with Amtrak, participating in surveys via Survey Points Club, purchasing additional points, or shopping with Amtrak’s retail partners like Teleflora or Vinesse Wines.

Without upcoming travel plans and unwilling to spend $18.85 for additional points they might never use, the traveler opted to earn five points by starting a survey with Survey Points Club. Though they did not complete it due to eligibility criteria, they still received five points for participation.

With this action taken, their Amtrak point expiration was extended until January 12, 2027. Despite this extension method's effectiveness and immediacy in posting new activity to accounts, users are advised to manually track expiration dates as these do not appear in accounts nor does Amtrak send reminders before expiry.
