The U.S. Coast Guard is undergoing a significant transformation of its helicopter fleet as part of the Integrated Deepwater System Program, initiated in the late 1990s. This program aimed to modernize various Coast Guard assets, including helicopters, cutters, and rescue boats. In 2002, a contract was awarded to Lockheed-Martin and Northrop-Grumman for this purpose.

Following the 9/11 attacks, national security concerns prompted an evaluation of several government agencies, including the Coast Guard. Known for chronic underfunding, the Coast Guard welcomed discussions about their needs.

The current helicopter fleet consists of two models: the MH-65E Dolphin and the MH-60T Jayhawk. The Eurocopter-produced MH-65E Dolphin underwent several upgrades over the years to extend its service life by 10,000 hours through a Service Life Extension Program (SLEP). Similarly, Sikorsky's MH-60T Jayhawk also received updates to enhance its capabilities and extend its service life from 20,000 to 30,000 hours.

In recent developments, the Coast Guard plans to retire its MH-65 Dolphin fleet over the next decade and replace them with additional MH-60Ts. The goal is to expand the Jayhawk fleet to 127 helicopters by acquiring surplus Navy airframes and newly built ones from Sikorsky.

"The conversion to an all-MH-60T Jayhawk fleet simplifies operations," stated a Coast Guard representative. The Jayhawks offer increased range and payload capacity compared to their predecessors.

The "T" model updates include advanced avionics suites and defensive systems such as armor plating and machine guns due to increased threats from narco-traffickers. These enhancements make the Jayhawk a versatile platform for various missions.

Despite budget constraints, these updates ensure that after completion of SLEP projects, the Jayhawks will serve at least another twelve years while aligning with other military branches' advancements in rotary-wing technology.
