Italian airline ITA Airways is in the process of leaving the SkyTeam alliance as it transitions into Star Alliance. This shift coincides with Lufthansa Group's acquisition and integration of ITA Airways. The German conglomerate has begun absorbing ITA after finalizing its purchase of a 41% stake for 325 million euros, while the Italian government retains the remaining shares.

Lufthansa Group CEO Carsten Spohr expressed optimism about ITA Airways' potential, stating, "We believe strongly in the potential of ITA Airways, we believe in the strength of Italy, of its economy, of its people." With this acquisition, Lufthansa adds ITA to its network airlines which include Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Swiss, and Lufthansa itself.

As part of this integration, ITA will switch from SkyTeam to Star Alliance. Notable members of Star Alliance include United Airlines and Air Canada. SkyTeam confirmed efforts to ensure a smooth transition during ITA's exit phase by April 30, 2025. However, full membership in Star Alliance for ITA is anticipated by mid-2026.

Members of Lufthansa's frequent flyer program can now earn and redeem miles on ITA flights and vice versa. It remains uncertain whether Lufthansa will merge Volare into Miles & More or maintain it separately.

Starting March 30, codesharing between ITA and Lufthansa Group flights will commence with approximately 100 routes available for booking from February 25. Additionally, passengers with lounge access will gain entry to lounges across both airlines from March 30.

In other developments within Europe, Lufthansa is pursuing further expansion opportunities. It recently agreed to acquire a minority stake in Latvia's airBaltic and is considering investing in Spain's Air Europa.
