In 2024, TPG chose Monterey, California, as the location for its company retreat, departing from traditional urban destinations like Las Vegas and New York City. The choice proved successful for the content team to build stronger connections in a scenic setting.

Monterey offers accessibility without feeling remote. Attendees could fly directly into Monterey Regional Airport (MRY) or opt for nearby airports like San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC). Despite some logistical challenges, these options facilitated travel to the retreat.

Monterey's small-town atmosphere encouraged TPG staff to spend more time together outside work hours. Copy Editor Will Gordon noted that exploring local bars and restaurants was a key bonding experience.

The Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa served as the accommodation for the TPG team, providing ample meeting spaces and amenities such as gardens, a gym, spa, golf course, tennis courts, and pools. Associate Writer Rachel Craft appreciated these facilities: "I loved the hotel we were at, with all its amenities like the hammock garden, giant board games, racquetball and hot tub."

TPG staff participated in various activities tailored to different interests. Senior Editor Lauren Wassum remarked on the variety: "When on company work trips, you have a lot of different personalities, but Monterey had plenty of team activities to suit everyone's liking." Activities included hiking in Big Sur and kayaking around Monterey Bay.

Evening events added value to the retreat experience. A dinner at Rustique Winery provided an opportunity for staff to gather in a picturesque setting. Various dining experiences were available throughout Monterey County.

The retreat ended just before the weekend, allowing employees to extend their stay if desired. Managing Editor Jordan Waller extended his trip: "I'd recommend cycling over the Golden Gate Bridge...and burning some small change at the Musee Mecanique."

Transportation within Monterey was manageable with options like Uber and Lyft available for smaller groups while larger group activities utilized shuttle buses.

Retreats offer an opportunity for remote teams to reconnect face-to-face. For digital-first companies like TPG seeking dynamic locations that encourage collaboration beyond typical conference settings can enhance team cohesion through shared experiences.
