Eclipse 500 | Wikipedia

The Eclipse 500, a very light jet (VLJ) developed by Eclipse Aviation, has made a significant impact on the aviation industry since its introduction. Designed to offer private jet-like comfort and speed at a lower cost, the twin-engine aircraft became popular among corporate executives, high-net-worth individuals, air taxi operators, and small businesses.

The concept for the Eclipse 500 emerged in the late 1990s when Vern Raburn envisioned an affordable and fuel-efficient jet that could democratize private jet travel. "He wanted to create an affordable, fuel-efficient, and easy-to-operate jet that could bridge the gap between high-end private jets and slower, less luxurious turboprop aircraft."

Eclipse Aviation was founded in 1998 with the Eclipse 500 as its flagship product. The aircraft took its maiden flight in 2002 and received FAA certification in 2006. Despite initial success, financial challenges led to Eclipse Aviation's closure. The company was later acquired by Eclipse Aerospace, which reintroduced the aircraft as the upgraded Eclipse 550.

The technical features of the Eclipse 500 include two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW610F-A engines providing efficient performance with low operating costs. Its aerodynamic design and lightweight airframe contribute to its efficiency. "The friction-stir welding technique used in its construction results in a smoother, more durable structure."

With a range of 1,295 miles (2,084 km), it connects major city pairs without refueling stops. Its cabin accommodates four to six passengers comfortably despite its compact size.

One notable feature is its Avio NG avionics system designed for single-pilot operations. This integrated flight management system enhances safety through advanced automation features like autopilot and auto-throttle.

The popularity of the Eclipse 500 stemmed from several factors: affordability with a base price around $2 million at launch; economical operation due to low fuel consumption; ease of use appealing to owner-operators; versatility allowing operation from smaller airports.

Despite production delays and bankruptcy declared by Eclipse Aviation in 2008 leading to uncertainty about future prospects for this model - it remains influential within VLJ market today alongside competitors such as Cessna Citation Mustang or Embraer Phenom100 among others offering comparable features performance capabilities each bringing unique advantages their respective buyers' needs preferences.
