Istanbul Airport | Wikipedia

Istanbul Airport (IST) has been recognized as the second busiest airport in Europe, attributed to its passenger capacity, strategic location, and efficient traffic flow. This status not only enhances Europe's commercial aviation but also significantly contributes to Turkey's growing aviation industry. As a major hub connecting continents, it plays a crucial role in international commerce.

Since 2013, IST has consistently ranked among Europe's top five airports by passenger traffic. In 2017, Istanbul's Atatürk Airport and Sabiha Gökçen together handled over 100 million passengers.

Established on October 7, 2013, Istanbul Airport was developed by a joint venture including Cengiz, MAPA, Limak, Kolin, and Kalyon. It was constructed in just 42 months and is one of Türkiye’s largest infrastructure projects. The airport supports an estimated annual capacity of 90 million passengers with facilities such as a main terminal covering 1.4 million square meters and three independent runways.

Designed by London-based Grimshaw architects with inspiration from Ottoman and Islamic architecture elements like vaulted ceilings that cast crescents of light onto marble floors on sunny days. The airport received LEED Gold certification for its design features including greenery and large windows creating openness.

The seven entrances symbolize Istanbul’s identity as the City on the Seven Hills while architectural elements like the air traffic control tower resemble Turkey's national flower - the tulip.

Istanbul International Airport (IST) is located in Arnavutköy district northwest of central Istanbul covering approximately 76.5 million square meters with parallel runways designed for simultaneous operations serving major airlines such as Turkish Airlines and Qatar Airways among others.

Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (SAW), situated on Istanbul’s east side has also seen growth becoming Europe’s ninth-busiest airport complementing IST’s development into one of the largest air transport hubs globally.

Future developments at IST include advanced cargo operations enhancing mobility aimed at boosting Istanbul’s position in international air commerce through increased terminal capacity additional runways new technologies streamlining traffic security flight operations aligning with Turkey's consistent investment priority in aviation infrastructure.

Among global rankings for busiest airports by seats in 2024 IST stands seventh behind Dubai International Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Tokyo Haneda Shanghai Pudong London Heathrow Dallas/Fort Worth respectively highlighting its significant standing within both European global contexts amidst leading airports worldwide today
