Private In Los Angeles: Van Nuys Airport | Simple Flying

Van Nuys Airport in Los Angeles is a major hub for private aviation, serving celebrities, business executives, and private jet owners. Located in the San Fernando Valley, it is one of the busiest general aviation airports globally. Unlike commercial airports, Van Nuys exclusively handles private, corporate, and charter flights.

The airport's history dates back to the late 1920s when it was known as Los Angeles Metropolitan Airport. It officially opened on December 17, 1928. During World War II, it was renamed Van Nuys Army Airfield by the US military. After returning to civilian control post-war, it became Van Nuys Airport in 1949.

Today, Van Nuys covers 730 acres and features multiple fixed-base operators (FBOs) like Clay Lacy Aviation and Signature Flight Support. Signature has two terminals at the airport on either side of the main runway.

There are two runways: Runway 16R/34L at 8,001 feet is used by larger aircraft such as private jets; Runway 16L/34R at 4,013 feet is typically used for flight training.

Van Nuys Airport offers numerous benefits for private passengers with its privacy and security measures. "Van Nuys Airport is completely private," allowing high-profile individuals to avoid crowded terminals and paparazzi often found at LAX. Passengers can drive directly to their aircraft.

Efficiency and convenience are also highlighted: "Unlike commercial airports...private jet passengers often arrive just 15-30 minutes before takeoff." Customizable services include luxury lounges and concierge services provided by FBOs.

Located just 15 miles from downtown Los Angeles, VNY provides easy access to key city areas compared to congested LAX traffic.

The airport accommodates various aircraft types including light jets like Cessna Citation CJ3 and heavy jets like Gulfstream G650ER. According to data from 2023, there are 619 aircraft based at VNY.

Environmental concerns have led Van Nuys Airport to pursue sustainability efforts such as solar projects generating surplus energy that offsets approximately "12,714 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually." Electric vehicle charging stations have been introduced along with stormwater management systems enhancing local aquifer supply since 2016.

An independent documentary titled One Six Right highlights the development of general aviation at Van Nuys Airport since its release in 2005.

Van Nuys remains a top choice for private aviation due to its location and world-class facilities attracting business leaders and celebrities alike while ensuring an exclusive experience unmatched elsewhere.
