The National Space Defense Center (NSDC), located at Schriever Space Force Base in Colorado Springs, plays a crucial role in protecting U.S. space assets from adversaries and threats. As part of the Joint Task Force–Space Defense (JTF-SD) under the United States Space Command, the NSDC coordinates civil, military, intelligence, and commercial space defense operations.

General John “Jay” Raymond described the JTF-SD as "a first-of-its-kind operational command established to protect and defend U.S., allied, partner and commercial assets and interests in space."

Initially established as the Joint Interagency Combined Space Operations Center (JICSpOC) in 2015, the center was renamed in 2017 to better define its roles. Gen. John Hyten stated that "in coordination with our partners and to eliminate confusion, we have decided to rename the JICSpOC to better describe its actual purpose."

The NSDC's mission involves conducting space superiority operations to deter aggression and defending space capabilities. According to NSDC officials, "the NSDC directly supports space defense unity of effort and expands information sharing in space defense operations among the DoD, National Reconnaissance Office, and other interagency partners."

Colonel Scott Brodeur emphasized collaboration by stating that "we provide a unity of effort working together with those disparate communities...to protect and defend our critical space assets."

Supporting the United States Space Command (USSPACECOM), Army General James Dickinson remarked on their collaborative efforts: "Everything we do at the JTF-SD is focused on our protect and defend mission...Together we support USSPACECOM to ensure there is never a ‘day without space.’"

Schriever Space Force Base provides command and control over more than 170 Department of Defense satellites. The base honors General Bernard Schriever for his contributions to establishing USAF’s space programs. The 50th SCS operates these satellites while maintaining cybersecurity posture.

According to Schriever SFB officials, "the 50th SCS operates, maintains and defends the national space enterprise...through cyberspace." Their responsibilities include providing mission assurance through innovative cyberspace operations.
