Qantas, Australia's national airline, has announced changes to its uniform policy for flight attendants. The carrier plans to introduce a new uniform by 2027 but has already relaxed gender-specific requirements. Female employees are no longer required to wear heels, and male employees can now wear makeup. Qantas stated that these changes reflect the times and its commitment to equality.

The airline also allows all employees to have long hair if styled in a bun or ponytail and permits diamond earrings and watches of any size or style. However, stockings remain mandatory with skirts, and tattoos must be covered.

These adjustments place Qantas among several airlines adopting more inclusive policies for flight attendant appearances. Alaska Airlines recently made similar changes, emphasizing freedom for gender expression.

Virgin Atlantic also updated its gender identity policy last September, allowing crew members to wear clothing that aligns with their identity. The airline said this change "champions the individuality of Virgin Atlantic’s people."

Other carriers like British Airways and JetBlue have made subtle adjustments toward more gender-inclusive uniforms. Newer airlines such as Iceland's Play have embraced casual, gender-neutral uniforms from the start.

Qantas plans to debut its new uniform design by 2027 as part of Project Sunrise initiatives. This will coincide with significant fleet investments, including over 100 new aircraft like the Airbus A350-1000.

Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson emphasized the importance of transforming the brand through a new uniform: “We have ambitious plans for the future and transforming the way we reflect the brand is critical to that." She added that while styles may change, pride in wearing the uniform remains unchanged.

The airline is currently seeking an Australian designer for the new uniforms and surveying its workforce for input on design elements.

Founded as Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Service (QANTAS), it operates extensive domestic and international routes from hubs in Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney. It is a founding member of Oneworld alliance and conducts flights across all seven continents seasonally.
