Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine confirmed that the county will contribute at least $50 million to further develop the project, reinforcing its long-term commitment to the airport’s growth, according to the New York Post.
MacArthur Airport, which serves approximately 1.6 million passengers annually, is owned and operated by the Town of Islip. Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter said the project has the potential to create high-quality jobs and new opportunities for young professionals in the area. The improvements align with ongoing efforts to enhance transit connectivity and economic stability in Suffolk County.
The Long Island Rail Road is expected to play a significant role in improving airport accessibility. LIRR President Rob Free said that relocating MacArthur’s terminal closer to Ronkonkoma station will encourage more travelers to use the train, reducing road congestion and enhancing the overall transportation experience.
