Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) has announced that the Los Angeles City Council has approved a $5 billion Multiple Award Task Order Contract (MATOC) to facilitate design-build and construction services for upcoming airport infrastructure projects. This announcement was shared on LAX’s official X account on February 19.

The newly approved MATOC is LAWA's largest procurement contract to date, assembling a pool of 31 pre-qualified design-build and construction contractors. According to its website, the five-year contract includes 13 first-time prime contractors and emphasizes participation from small and local businesses.

According to LAWA, the contract is expected to accelerate modernization efforts at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Van Nuys Airport (VNY). The streamlined procurement process will allow for faster execution of infrastructure projects, particularly in preparation for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Councilmember Traci Park, who represents the district that includes LAX, said that the approval of the MATOC is a "major win for our city," as it will expedite airport upgrades while creating thousands of new jobs. Park also noted that the contract sets historically high subcontracting goals for small, local, and disabled veteran-owned businesses.

LAWA is the government entity that owns and operates LAX and Van Nuys Airport. According to its website, it is a revenue-generating department of the City of Los Angeles overseeing major airport improvement projects and infrastructure development to support regional transportation needs.

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is noted as the eighth-busiest airport in the world, serving nearly 66 million passengers in 2023. According to their website, it is undergoing a multi-billion-dollar capital improvement program to modernize its facilities and enhance passenger experience.
