Cathay celebrated a significant achievement on Thursday, March 6, 2025, as it was honored with two prestigious accolades at Air Transport World’s (ATW) 51st annual Airline Industry Achievement Awards. Cathay Cargo regained its position as Cargo Operator of the Year, having previously been named the world’s best cargo airline in 2023. Simultaneously, Cathay Pacific was named Eco-Airline of the Year, marking the first time an Asian airline has received this recognition.

Expressing pride in achieving these significant recognitions, Cathay Chief Customer and Commercial Officer Lavinia Lau said: “Winning these two prestigious airline industry awards at the same time is an extraordinary achievement and a true testament to the efforts and dedication of our entire global team over the past year. I would like to sincerely thank our people for their incredible support and commitment, without which these award wins would not have been possible. ”

Lau further emphasized Cathay's commitment to cargo operations and sustainability: “Cargo has long been an important line of business for Cathay, and as the largest cargo operator at the world’s busiest cargo airport, we are committed to doing our part to strengthen Hong Kong’s position at the forefront of the global cargo industry. Sustainability is also an area where Cathay strives to be a leader, especially in the transition towards renewable energy in aviation. ”

Cargo Operator of the Year

Cathay Director Cargo Tom Owen expressed his gratitude: “We are honoured to receive the prestigious title of Cargo Operator of the Year for the second time in three years. ” He highlighted that this achievement reflects his team’s dedication and reinforces Hong Kong's status as a leading global air cargo hub.

This recognition underscores Cathay Cargo's pursuit of innovation and excellence in air cargo services. The company has implemented strategic initiatives such as intermodal services between Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) and Dongguan and adopted new technologies like application programming interfaces (API) for forwarders.

Eco-Airline of the Year

Sustainability lies at core operations for Cathay with commitments towards net- zero carbon emissions by2050and transitioning towards more sustainable resource use.

Cathay General Manager Sustainability Grace Cheung remarked: “At Cathay ,we believe that sustainability issues are complex requiring collective effort.This recognition highlights power collaboration commitment bringing together people customers suppliers business partners regulators communities more sustainable future.”

Cathay launched its Corporate SAF Programmein2022to accelerate transition sustainable aviation fuel(SAF).The programme established leading position Asia record commitment over6 ,050metric tonnes SAF.Concrete steps taken promoting supportive SAF policy Hong Kong hub co-initiating launch Hong KongSAF Coalition Business Environmental Council(BEC).

In addition,Cathay made strides adopting circular solutions reducing reliance single-use plastics(SUP).The pledge cut passenger-facing SUP items from7 .7pieces per passenger2019to1 .5pieces end2025.As end2024usage reduced2 .6pieces per passenger.Enhanced approaches inflight recycling introduced partnering Airport Authority Hong Kong pilot scheme improving collection sorting process.From July2024all bottled water uplifted flights packaged100%recycled plastic(rPET)bottles mitigating SUP usage.
