United Airlines recently undertook one of the most ambitious international network expansions in modern airline history. Over the past two years, the airline has added over a dozen different new routes to destinations across the globe, many of which are traditionally lower-volume leisure destinations. One of the most notable examples is United Airlines' seasonal service from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Marrakesh Menara Airport (RAK). This non-stop flight connects the airline's principal East Coast gateway with a travel destination in North Africa that has grown more popular with travelers.

Like many of the airline's flights to Europe, this flight is a seasonal service, which helps serve demand during peak travel months. What distinguishes this flight from others is that it operates in the winter season rather than the European summer when U.S. travelers typically head to Europe in large numbers. The first service took place back in October.

Now that it is March, it approaches the time of year when United Airlines will discontinue this service for the summer season, allowing it to use its aircraft for a more lucrative route to a European destination. The final service from Marrakesh to Newark will take place on March 27th, 2025, and no services will operate during the summer months. The service is currently scheduled to resume on October 25th, 2025, according to aviation analytics site Cirium.

A deeper look at this unique Marrakesh service reveals that United became the first U.S.-based airline to operate direct flights to Marrakech when it launched this service. It operates three times per week using a Boeing 767-300ER, featuring 46 Polaris business class and 22 Premium Plus seats. During its period of seasonal operation, United Airlines Flight 828 departs from Newark at 21:45 on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays and arrives in Marrakech the following morning at around 11 AM.

The return flight operated by United Airlines Flight 627 departs from Marrakech on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 1:20 PM and touches down at New Jersey's airport roughly at4:25 PM. Marrakesh became the fifth African destination served by United Airlines when this route launched; it joined Accra in Ghana; Lagos in Nigeria; Johannesburg; and Cape Town in South Africa. The route expansion was part of United's largest-ever winter schedule with preparations underway for flights to Dakar Senegal starting summer2025

There are several reasons why United Airlines might invest in launching this winter-only route. Marrakesh is extremely popular with winter-season travelers as it becomes very hot during summer months making it less appealing tourists furthermore ability serve throughout year efficiently manage fleet
