Grant Milstead, Vice President of Digital Technology at United Airlines, said that the company’s swift and successful rollout of Starlink will enable it to reach 300 regional aircraft installations by the end of the year. Milstead made this statement in a March press release.

"Our ability to roll-out this innovative service with unprecedented speed and scale is a direct result of the advanced equipment, technology and team of experts at United," said Milstead, VP of Digital Technology. "Starlink has been a terrific partner – our combined spirit of innovation and collaboration will enable us to hit our goal of more than 300 regional aircraft installations before the end of this year."

In a March 7 press release, United Airlines announced the installation of Starlink on its first regional aircraft, highlighting the equipment’s technical benefits such as its compact size, lightweight design, and easy maintenance. Beginning in May, the airline plans to install Starlink on more than 40 regional aircraft per month through the end of 2025. This initiative aims to enhance in-flight connectivity for passengers and underscores United’s commitment to improving the overall travel experience.

According to a TechRadar.com article, United Airlines' new Starlink system offers Wi-Fi speeds of up to 250 Mbps, which is 50 times faster than current options. This allows seamless browsing, streaming, and work during flights. The Starlink antenna weighs just 85 pounds, is electronically steered, and requires less maintenance, contributing to more fuel-efficient operations. The installation process is notably faster, with each aircraft out of service for only four days compared to over ten days for traditional systems. This quicker installation helps minimize disruptions to the airline's operations.

A Wall Street Journal article reported that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is focusing on increasing air traffic controller hiring and modernizing technology to enhance safety and efficiency. Efforts are underway to recruit and train new air traffic control personnel while also improving air traffic management systems. This initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure the U.S. aviation system can meet growing demand. As part of this effort, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy mentioned that the FAA is testing Starlink in regions like New Jersey and Alaska to evaluate its effectiveness in improving aviation safety communications. Additionally, Elon Musk has provided Starlink terminals to the FAA at no cost to restore air traffic control connectivity.

Starlink, a subsidiary of SpaceX, is a satellite internet constellation designed to provide global broadband coverage. As of September 2024, it includes more than 7,000 small satellites in low Earth orbit with plans to expand nearly 12,000 satellites. Starlink's goal is to deliver high-speed internet access across the globe with a particular focus on underserved areas.

With U.S. mainland hubs in Chicago; Denver; Houston; Los Angeles; New York/Newark; San Francisco; and Washington D.C., United Airlines operates the most comprehensive global route network among North American carriers and is now considered the largest airline in the world as measured by available seat miles.
