Spirit Airlines has announced the addition of 15 new routes from Detroit, set to commence in May or June. This expansion is part of Spirit's strategy following its recent exit from bankruptcy protection. The airline, which holds less than 4% of the U.S. market according to Cirium Diio data, aims to increase its presence with these new routes.
The routes will mostly operate on a sub-daily basis, except for two daily services to Hartford and Phoenix. Nine of these routes are new additions to Spirit's network, including flights to Milwaukee and Louisville.
"Detroit seats for sale fell from 35% of its total in 2004 to 10% in 2019 and 7% in 2024," noted James Pearson. "Spirit's new routes may mean that the share will increase in 2025."
