Spirit Airlines has announced the addition of 15 new routes from Detroit, set to commence in May or June. This expansion is part of Spirit's strategy following its recent exit from bankruptcy protection. The airline, which holds less than 4% of the U.S. market according to Cirium Diio data, aims to increase its presence with these new routes.

The routes will mostly operate on a sub-daily basis, except for two daily services to Hartford and Phoenix. Nine of these routes are new additions to Spirit's network, including flights to Milwaukee and Louisville.

"Detroit seats for sale fell from 35% of its total in 2004 to 10% in 2019 and 7% in 2024," noted James Pearson. "Spirit's new routes may mean that the share will increase in 2025."

In addition to the initial set of routes, Spirit plans five more connections from Detroit starting in May. These include flights to Baltimore, Charlotte, Memphis, Raleigh/Durham, and San Antonio.

"Spirit must meaningfully increase point-to-point traffic on its new routes," said Pearson. He highlighted the example of Louisville, where Delta serves up to four times daily with an average fare of $242 one-way.

Overall, Spirit intends to operate 40 routes from Detroit between May and August 2025. This is a significant increase compared to previous years when no more than 27 airport pairs were available from Detroit.
