Iberia, the Spanish airline, has expanded its transatlantic network with four new routes utilizing the Airbus A321XLR aircraft. The airline was the launch customer for this aircraft model, which offers lower trip costs compared to widebody planes and requires fewer passengers to reach profitability. Despite higher seat-mile costs, it presents a lower-risk opportunity for long-haul operations.

The first A321XLR delivered to Iberia was registered as EC-OIL in October 2024 and began service the following month. Iberia plans to acquire seven more of these aircraft, with additional options available. All A321XLRs will feature a two-class configuration with 182 seats.

Recently announced routes from Madrid include Fortaleza and Recife in Brazil, New York JFK, and San Juan in Puerto Rico. These routes are part of Iberia's strategy to expand its long-haul narrowbody operations from Madrid, which ranks as the ninth-largest airport globally for long-haul flights.

The route from Madrid to Fortaleza is set to commence on January 19 with three weekly flights initially, increasing to four. The New York JFK route will see the A321XLR replace the larger A330 starting October 26 on a daily basis. Flights to Recife begin on December 13 with an initial frequency of three per week, rising to four. The San Juan route will start on September 13 with five weekly flights initially but will vary between four weekly and daily frequencies.

In addition to these new routes, Iberia continues its operations in South America with a total of 12 cities served when including widebody aircraft. The airline also aims for increased connectivity across Europe via its Madrid hub.

For San Juan specifically, adding single-aisle service allows Iberia to increase frequency up to a record high of 11 weekly flights by mid-December while reallocating its A330-200 fleet elsewhere.

Meanwhile, at New York JFK airport during winter months, Iberia plans twice-daily services using one A321XLR flight per day. This adjustment aligns capacity with demand during off-season periods while reducing overall capacity by eight percent compared to previous schedules.

Currently operating six XLR routes (as of March 26), including Washington Dulles and Boston alongside those mentioned above; this development marks significant growth within their transatlantic offerings using narrow-body aircraft technology that enables longer nonstop journeys such as nearly ten hours scheduled duration between Madrid-Washington Dulles come April when resumed year-round
