A security breach at Norfolk International Airport (ORF) led to flight delays on Wednesday evening when a man crossed a barbed wire fence and reached the airfield. Although quickly addressed, the incident provoked concerns regarding airport security measures.
Virginia-based news outlet WAVY reports that the man was apprehended shortly after entering the airfield by airfield operations teams assisted by the Norfolk Airport Authority Police. Chris Jones, the principal spokesperson for the airport, commented on the rapid response: "[He was spotted] almost right away." The man’s proximity to aircraft raised concerns, but no direct safety threat was posed to the nearby planes.
In response to the incident, the airport team briefly closed a runway to facilitate law enforcement actions. Chris Jones emphasized that only two outbound flights experienced minor delays due to the breach. The airport managed to handle the situation without significant operational impact.
