Edinburgh Airport | Wikipedia

Edinburgh Airport is set to achieve a significant milestone in 2025 by surpassing one million round-trip seats for sale between the United States, Canada, and the UK for the first time. This development marks a 26% year-on-year capacity increase, signaling robust growth in transatlantic travel options from the Scottish capital.

Seven airlines are scheduled to operate across 15 transatlantic routes, with up to 16 daily take-offs projected in August. Highlighting the remarkable capacity expansion, Edinburgh Airport will host approximately 1,060,000 round-trip seats, representing a 117% increase relative to pre-pandemic 2019 levels.

Air Canada has contributed to this expansion with a new Montreal route, announced on March 26. The service will be operated using Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, with three weekly flights starting on June 27. This route marks the first time Edinburgh has offered flights to Montreal.

James Pearson, the source of data and figure used, notes that the noticeable growth in Edinburgh's transatlantic capacity has affected Glasgow. Previously, Glasgow was Scotland's main transatlantic airport, possessing 86% of the market share in 2004. However, that number has dwindled to 9% in 2025, with many airlines now favoring consolidation at Edinburgh.

Despite the shift, combined capacity from both Edinburgh and Glasgow will reach over 1,160,000 seats in 2025, an 8% increase from the previous record high set in 2017. This expansion primarily caters to a peak in demand during the summer months, with August alone accounting for 187,000 seats.

American Airlines marks its return to Edinburgh, previously operating from 2015 to 2019. The airline plans to operate widebody aircraft this year. Meanwhile, JetBlue, which will introduce a new route to Boston, and WestJet, enhancing its Toronto service, are among several airlines increasing frequency on existing routes, reflecting growing demand for air travel between Edinburgh and North America.

Details for airlines servicing Edinburgh in 2025, as reported on March 27, may be subject to change.
