Air Canada is set to strengthen its fleet with 89 new aircraft on order, comprising a mix of narrow and widebody aircraft from Airbus and Boeing. The comprehensive order includes the Airbus A220-200, Airbus A321XLR, Boeing 737 MAX 8, and two variants of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

The flag carrier's current order book features five aircraft types, with a total of 253 aircraft already in inventory, according to ch-aviation. Of these, 38 are wet-leased, 188 are actively flying, and 27 are parked.

Airbus A220-200 aircraft, previously known as the Bombardier CSeries before being acquired by Airbus, is being produced in Canada and Alabama, USA. “The A220 Family has become the clear favourite of passengers in the 100 to 150-seat aircraft category," Airbus stated, noting features like its quiet cabin and efficient engines. Air Canada already has 34 A220-200s and will add another 31 to its fleet.

The Airbus A321XLR is seen as a game-changer in the midsize aircraft market. Airbus explains that, “Based on the popular A321neo, the A321XLR is a fully optimised aircraft creating new exciting opportunities for airlines.” Air Canada is expected to receive its first A321XLR in the fourth quarter of 2025, having ordered 30 of these aircraft.

In terms of Boeing aircraft, Air Canada currently operates 44 Boeing 737 MAX 8s with another nine on order. Boeing highlights the 737 MAX family for its efficiency and environmental performance stating, “The 737 MAX family delivers enhanced efficiency.”

Air Canada's widebody orders also include the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Known for its fuel efficiency and range flexibility, Boeing describes, “The industry-leading technology of the 787 Dreamliner creates remarkable opportunities for airlines.” Air Canada has 31 787-9 Dreamliners flying and one more on order, along with 18 new 787-10s.

While the average age of Air Canada's fleet is 17.5 years, according to ch-aviation, Planespotters.net reports a younger age of 12.3 years, attributed to the older subsidiary fleet. The new aircraft deliveries will enhance Air Canada's operational efficiency and ability to offer more routes.
