An Embraer E195-E2 operated by Helvetic Airways for Swiss International Air Lines marked a significant milestone at London City Airport (LCY) on March 26. The aircraft's landing signifies the E195-E2 as the largest jet to operate commercially at the smaller airport. This event was highlighted in a joint press release by Helvetic Airways, London City Airport, and Embraer. The E195-E2's fuel efficiency and environmental credentials are anticipated to help LCY manage more passengers while adhering to the city’s climate guidelines.

The aircraft's arrival at LCY is expected to improve the range of destinations accessible from the airport due to the E195-E2's extended range capabilities, a factor vital for the airport's international connectivity. The aircraft first showcased its potential on its debut flight to LCY in 2022 during a demonstration event.

LCY presents unique operational challenges due to its location within London’s crowded urban setting, requiring steep ascent and descent paths. Embraer’s newly developed Enhanced Takeoff System (E2TS) is designed to meet these demands. According to Marie-Louise Philippe of Embraer, the E2TS “will increase the range of the E195-E2 specifically from LCY, from 3200 km to 4000 km,” enabling access to destinations like Istanbul, Gran Canaria, and Athens.

Philippe emphasized the importance of LCY, stating, "London City, where 75% of flights are on Embraer aircraft, is a special place for us." The E195-E2's introduction represents a step forward in sustainable aviation, with 30% lower CO2 emissions per seat and a reduction in noise footprint.

The introduction of the E195-E2 enhances options for passengers preferring a closer departure point than London Heathrow. Helvetic Airways, operating under a wet lease arrangement with Swiss International Air Lines, utilizes Embraer aircraft for scheduled, charter, and wet-lease services. Tobias Pogorevc, CEO of Helvetic Airways, expressed pride in the achievement, stating, “Helvetic Airways has both, and we are proud to be the first airline to bring the larger E195-E2 to London City Airport.”
