United Airlines is known for its association with the term "friend," a sentiment embedded in its history and identity. The airline's iconic phrase, "Fly the friendly skies," has long been part of its image. United also made headlines with the "Friendship One," a record-setting round-the-world flight in 1988. For a brief period, certain aircraft displayed the title "Friend Ship" as part of a retro livery.

In a nod to its past, United designated N475UA, an Airbus A320, as the "Friend Ship." This aircraft has a storied history within the airline. United resurfaced the Friend Ship branding by repainting N121UA for the last Boeing 747-400 flight between San Francisco and Honolulu. The mantle is now carried by the A320 with the same name.

Back in 2010, United polled its employees to choose a retro livery for its 85th anniversary, offering various historic designs. The "Friend Ship" livery emerged as the winner, and N475UA was selected to wear it.

The Airbus A320 represents a significant chapter in United's fleet history. The aircraft was part of an era when Airbus began competing in the single-aisle market, traditionally dominated by Boeing. United's first A320 deliveries arrived in the 1990s, signifying a strategic shift for the airline.

N475UA, delivered in 2001, is powered by IAE V2527-A5 turbofans and has completed numerous cycles and flight hours. Initially, it was part of United's low-cost brand "Ted," flying in an all-economy configuration. After the discontinuation of "Ted," it was reincorporated into United's main fleet with a different seating layout.

Operating within the continental US and certain international destinations, the A320 Friend Ship remains a part of United's domestic operations, with notable activity at Denver, the airline's largest A320 base.

Despite its nostalgic livery, the A320 Friend Ship lacks the modern amenities found in newer aircraft. If passengers prioritize contemporary features such as in-flight entertainment and power ports, they might consider opting for United's NEXT-equipped aircraft.

The aging A320 fleet, including N475UA, is gradually being retired. United is acquiring more efficient planes like the Airbus A321neos and Boeing 737 MAX. Nonetheless, the A320 Friend Ship is expected to continue serving for the foreseeable future, offering aviation enthusiasts and travelers a slice of history.

United plans for its next significant milestone in 2026, marking 100 years since the first flight of its predecessor, Varney Airlines. Whether the Friend Ship branding will continue beyond N475UA's retirement remains uncertain, but it remains symbolic of United's legacy.
