The private jet industry has seen significant growth since the pandemic. During the period when commercial flights were halted, many people turned to private jets for travel to maintain business operations. The convenience and flexibility offered by private aviation have led to an increased demand for private flights and ownership among those who can afford them.

Defining the intended travel needs is crucial before investing in a private jet. Factors to consider include destination preferences, the number of passengers, facilities required, and budget. Many first-time owners opt for smaller jets, with prices ranging from $2 million to more than $80 million, depending on the model and features.

Private jets generally fall into categories such as Very Light Jet (VLJ), Light Jet (LJ), Mid-size Jet (MJ), Super Mid-size Jet (SMJ), Heavy Jet (HJ), and Ultra Long Range Jet (ULR). Purchasing a private jet is a substantial investment recommended for those planning to fly over 300 hours annually. Operating costs entail expenses like fuel, maintenance, crew wages, taxes, and management fees.

For first-time buyers, very light jets present an appealing choice due to lower upfront costs and operational expenses. They typically seat six to eight passengers and offer a range of 1,000 to 1,500 nautical miles. They are ideally suited to regional travel and capable of single-pilot operation.

The Cirrus Vision Jet, introduced in 2016, leads the very light jet category with noteworthy safety features like the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS) and Garmin’s Safe Return autoland system. It accommodates six passengers, cruises at 311 knots with a 600 nautical miles range, and costs around $1.96 million new or $1.5 million pre-owned.

The HondaJet Elite II, originating from the Honda Aircraft Company, is another renowned model. Commenced in the 1980s, the HondaJet HA-420 saw its first deliveries in 2016. The Elite version, with improvements in range and comfort, reached the market in 2018. It seats seven, features GE Honda HF120 engines, and as of 2024, there are over 250 units built. The new price stands at $6.95 million, while pre-owned units cost about $3.65 million.

Embraer's Phenom 100, entering service in 2008, is another option. With over 400 units in the world, this aircraft is comparable to the HondaJet Elite regarding cost, speed, and range. It seats seven, boasts a maximum weight of 10,582 pounds, and covers 1,178 nautical miles. A new unit costs $5.3 million, with pre-owned prices starting at $1.995 million.

When budget considerations permit, the Embraer Phenom 300E stands out in the Light Jet category. Offering a spacious cabin and superior performance, it seats up to ten passengers and has a range of 2,010 nautical miles. The new price is $11.5 million, while pre-owned units are priced around $7.695 million.

Cessna's Citation CJ series offers a range of jets catering to first-time buyers' needs. These jets are lauded for their reliability and performance. The CJ3 seats up to nine passengers, with a range of 2,040 nautical miles; the larger CJ4 supports two more passengers and a 2,165 nautical mile range. The smaller Citation M2 is a viable entry-level choice, seating seven with a 1,550 nautical mile range.

Turboprop aircraft can also be a pragmatically economical option. Known for fuel efficiency and short runway capabilities, they are suitable for regional flights carrying up to nine passengers. A model to consider is the Pilatus PC-12, a single-engine turboprop with a reach of 1,803 nautical miles.

Ultimately, potential buyers should assess mission objectives and consider whether their priorities align with a new or pre-owned purchase to ensure a sound financial investment. Celebrities and high-net-worth individuals may find larger models like the Gulfstream G650ER or Bombardier Global 7500 fit their exclusive requirements.

Related to current trends, information about new models, such as the latest HondaJet, is also available for those interested in the latest developments in private aviation.
