Airlines are intensifying their efforts to adopt sustainable practices, as demonstrated by recent discussions at Routes Asia involving key stakeholders such as Perth Airport, Cebu Pacific Airlines, the Malaysian Airport Authority, and Mactan–Cebu International Airport.

During these discussions, representatives highlighted various strategies aimed at reducing the industry's carbon footprint. Perth Airport's Chief Commercial and Aviation Officer, Kate Holsgrove, shared the airport's dedication to sustainability. Perth Airport is focusing on integrating solar power and eliminating single-use plastics. They aim for 50% renewable energy by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2040.

Cebu Pacific Airlines' Director of Operations, Rohan Kapoor, highlighted their steps towards reducing emissions through efficient seating models and renewable energy usage for ground vehicles. Kapoor mentioned that while they were pioneers in using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in Asia, current costs hinder widespread adoption. The airline has invested in more fuel-efficient aircraft and reduced their emissions and noise pollution significantly.

Meanwhile, Malaysia Airports' Senior General Manager, Megat Ardian, emphasized optimizing current facilities over expanding, prioritizing energy-efficient renovations and sustainable practices such as adopting solar panels and electric vehicles. They plan to use decarbonization metrics to guide future improvements.

At Mactan–Cebu International Airport, General Manager Jayjay Neri explained the push towards more energy-efficient operations, including increased solar panel usage. A second runway is being developed to improve air traffic efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.

Mr. Subhas Menon, Director General of AAPA, pointed out that the costs associated with transitioning to sustainable models are substantial. According to the IATA Sustainability and Economics Report, thousands of new renewable fuel plants will be necessary, with costs potentially reaching $8.1 trillion.

"Despite contributing just 2.5% of global CO2 emissions, the airline industry is responsible for 4% of global warming," the press release noted, underscoring the industry's commitment to addressing environmental concerns.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel is seen as a critical component for achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, though the costs remain a significant hurdle. The transition is expected to require an estimated $4.7 trillion, impacting passenger fares.

Routes Asia has shown that airlines and airports are determined to overcome these challenges by implementing practical measures to minimize their environmental impact.
