Gulfstream G500 | Official Website

Gulfstream, the renowned aircraft manufacturer and a part of General Dynamics, has been a dominant force in the production of business aircraft since its inception in 1958. Throughout its history, Gulfstream has developed over 2,000 aircraft, setting benchmarks for luxury and performance. However, over the years, several iconic models have been discontinued, owing to advancements in technology and shifting market demands.

One such model is the Gulfstream G550, an aircraft that enjoyed widespread acclaim after its maiden flight in 2002. This model ceased production in July 2021. Mark Burns, President of Gulfstream, remarked, "The G550 set the standard for subsequent aircraft and the industry. With more than 600 in service, the G550 has earned its place as a leader in business aviation. Its technological innovations and safety enhancements earned the G550 development team the prestigious Robert J. Collier Trophy in 2003." The G550 came with advanced technological features that reduced pilot workload and improved safety, particularly under low-visibility conditions. Notable owners of this aircraft include Tiger Woods, Mark Cuban, and Elon Musk.

Following the G550 is the Gulfstream G450, introduced in 2004 as an elongated version of the Gulfstream IV. It remained in production until 2018. FlexJet highlighted its business utility: "Consumed with efficiency and yet capable of entertaining for hours and is perfectly suited to be a sanctuary of productivity or total peace." It was renowned for its sound-cancelling technology, providing a productive and peaceful environment onboard.

The Gulfstream G200, which last rolled off the production line in December 2011, is another noteworthy aircraft. It had its origins with Israel Aircraft Industries and entered the Gulfstream lineup after the acquisition of Galaxy Aerospace in 2001. Known for its performance that exceeded its contemporaries, the G200 had a maximum cruising speed of 528 mph and could cover 3,400 nautical miles, allowing for non-stop transcontinental flights.

In the category of smaller jets, the Gulfstream G100, known initially as the IAI Astra SPX, was in development for over three decades, with production ending in 2017. This aircraft was particularly favored by the military, with both the United States Air Force and Navy utilizing it during its service life.

The Gulfstream G150, an enhancement of the G100, came into existence in 2002 and left the production line in 2017. Known for its larger cabin, improved avionics, and higher maximum takeoff weight, the G150 offered three different cabin layouts. Stan Dixon, Vice President of cabin programs at Gulfstream, noted, "The model has the highest mission availability rate of any Gulfstream. Given that the company consistently rates number one in product support, that’s saying a lot."

Despite their discontinuation, these models reflect Gulfstream's commitment to excellence and the evolution of private aviation. Each aircraft has contributed to Gulfstream's rich legacy and continues to hold relevance in today's market through pre-owned sales and secondary uses.
