Emirates has officially joined the Aviation Circularity Consortium (ACC) alongside SL Metals, aiming to advance the circular economy for aviation. This move highlights Emirates' ongoing commitment to sustainability and contributing to decarbonization efforts in the industry, building upon the Consortium’s 2050 Industry Roadmap unveiled in November 2024.

Emirates has embedded recycling and circular solutions in its operations as part of a broader sustainability strategy. This includes cabin interior upcycling, the use of sustainable materials, inflight initiatives, and waste reduction programs. By joining the ACC, Emirates aims to further contribute to circular aviation innovations and strengthen collaborative efforts in the industry.

SL Metals, a Singapore-based aluminum alloy distributor, brings expertise in aluminum solutions to the consortium. The company serves the Asia Pacific and Middle East regions with a range of aluminum products used across various industries, including aerospace and precision engineering. SL Metals aims to accelerate sustainable supply chain practices and material circularity in aviation through its participation in the ACC.

Ahmed Safa, Head of Engineering & MRO at Emirates Group, emphasized the need for sustainable solutions throughout an aircraft’s lifecycle. “Aviation must rethink how materials are used across an aircraft’s lifecycle, from production to retirement. With the number of retired aircraft continuing to grow, the need for sustainable end-of-life solutions is more urgent than ever. At Emirates, we are identifying new pathways to extend our fleet’s lifespan, and joining the ACC enables us to collaborate on sustainable initiatives that reduce waste, enhance efficiency, and accelerate aviation’s transition to a circular economy.”

Sam Tan Yee Leong, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of SL Metals, pointed out the importance of responsible sourcing and efficient material use. “Aluminium plays a critical role in aviation, as in many other industries, making responsible sourcing and efficient material use essential. Aluminium production also accounts for 3% of global industrial CO2 emissions, making sustainable practices across the supply chain increasingly important. SL Metals remains committed to improving sustainability within our own operations while supporting broader industry-wide efforts. Through the ACC, we look forward to advancing best practices in aluminium use and supporting initiatives that shape a more resilient and sustainable aviation supply chain.”

The ACC is gaining momentum by uniting key stakeholders in the aviation ecosystem to foster progress in aviation circularity. As the second airline to join the ACC, Emirates' involvement underscores the growing recognition within the industry that circularity is vital for decarbonization. Emirates' expertise in sustainable fleet management is expected to play a key role in addressing the challenge of handling end-of-life aircraft safely and responsibly. Meanwhile, SL Metals will enhance the Consortium’s ability to develop impactful circular solutions, especially as the demand for critical materials in aviation rises.
