American Airlines is one of the largest carriers in the United States, operating an extensive mainline fleet of around 1,000 commercial jets. Like other major US airlines, it employs a hub and spoke model. It enjoys a majority market share in three significant US airports: Dallas/Fort Worth, Charlotte, and Miami. The airline also holds a notable position in Phoenix, Arizona.

According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, American Airlines dominates the market at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) with a 68% share, at Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) with 66.7%, and at Miami International Airport (MIA) with 59%.

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is American Airlines' largest hub, located near the airline's headquarters. It is the second-busiest airport in the United States when measured by seat numbers, coming after Delta's hub at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport. "DFW Airport customers can choose among 193 domestic and 67 international nonstop destinations worldwide," states the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

Charlotte Douglas Airport, American Airlines' second-largest hub, set a passenger record in 2024 with over 58 million visitors and handles more than 188 global destinations. It is located six miles from downtown Charlotte. "Passenger counts reached a record-breaking 58,811,725 in 2024," according to Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

In Miami, American Airlines accounts for over half of the market at Miami International Airport, which serves as the primary gateway to Latin America and Caribbean countries. "Miami International Airport is among the busiest airports in the world," as confirmed by Miami International Airport. The airport's infrastructure supports a significant volume of international flights and cargo operations.

American Airlines was established over 95 years ago and continues to be a leading air carrier worldwide. The airline dominates the US market with 21% market share and maintains the highest number of scheduled seats and flights. According to OAG, "American Airlines remains the biggest carrier in the US this month with 21% of the market." However, its market value, at $7 billion in March 2024, places it as the 20th most valuable airline globally.

The airline's market share in the US domestic sector was recorded at 17.5% in 2024, ranking second, based on data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Despite its size, its market valuation lags behind competitors such as Delta, IndiGo, Ryanair, and United.
