Private jet rental in 2025 offers a range of options and prices, with costs varying based on the type of aircraft, trip distance, and timing. Chartering a small turboprop or very light jet can start at around $2,000 per flight hour, whereas renting an ultra-long-range jet can exceed $15,000 to $20,000 per hour. According to Flying Magazine, "A short flight on a small aircraft...may cost around $2,000-$5,000, while a long-range flight on a larger aircraft...can cost upwards of $100,000 or more."

Flightpath, a charter firm from Canada, notes that "the truth is that private flight costs can vary widely based on several factors, making it essential to understand the nuances of pricing in this industry." Different pricing models exist, such as outright purchase, fractional shares, or pre-purchased flying time through jet cards.

FlyUSA provides average hourly charter rates by aircraft type. Very light jets, with seats for 4–5 passengers, cost $2,000–$5,000 per hour. Light jets, suitable for 5–8 passengers, are priced around $2,500–$4,500 per hour. Midsize jets can accommodate 7–9 passengers and range from $4,500 to $7,500 per hour. Super midsize jets, with a transcontinental range, cost $7,500 to $12,500 per hour. Heavy jets, for 12–16 passengers capable of international flights, charge $10,000 to $22,000 per hour. Ultra-long-range jets, with a seating capacity for 12–19 passengers, can cost $15,000 to $25,000 or more per hour.

The overall cost of charter flights also considers route length. New York to Miami costs approximately $9,000 to $15,000 for a 2.5-hour light jet flight. Los Angeles to Las Vegas, a 1-hour trip in a light jet, ranges from $2,500 to $4,500. A midsize jet from Chicago to Dallas costs $15,000 to $25,000 for a 2.5-hour flight. New York to Los Angeles ranges from $40,000 to $70,000 on a super-midsize jet for a 5–6-hour flight.

Charter costs can include additional fees beyond the hourly rate such as fuel surcharges, landing fees, crew overnight expenses, de-icing charges, catering, ground transportation, international fees, and potential repositioning flight costs.

To reduce costs, travelers may consider empty leg opportunities or flying during off-peak times. Maximizing occupancy, opting for smaller aircraft for short trips, and utilizing membership benefits can further economize travel expenses.

Flexibility or advanced planning can help mitigate the impact of restricted availability or last-minute bookings that drive up costs. Understanding how costs differ according to aircraft type, charter models, and potential savings is essential for renting private jets in the US.
