Sonder, a platform for short-term rentals offering both apartments and boutique hotels, has recently joined forces with Marriott, bringing its offerings under the "Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy" label. This partnership extends early access to Marriott Bonvoy members, allowing them to earn and redeem points at Sonder locations via the Sonder website. The complete integration into Marriott's systems is set to occur later in 2025.

Founded in 2014, Sonder manages about 9,000 units across ten countries. Its focus is on urban locales such as New Orleans, Paris, and Dubai, providing both apartment-style accommodations with amenities like in-unit laundry and kitchens, and competitively priced boutique hotel rooms with coworking spaces.

Sonder operates its properties under long-term lease agreements, positioning itself apart from Airbnb's private rental model. Marriott Bonvoy members can earn and redeem points during Sonder's early access phase by booking directly through Sonder.

During a recent trip to London, I booked stays at two different Sonder properties. At the Sonder Inverness Mews apartment, the cost for a two-night stay was $960.26, with no points redemption available at the time. The earning and redemption of Marriott Bonvoy points through the Sonder website required a phone call to confirm redemption rates. In terms of earning, Sonder apartments accrue 5 points per dollar, with elite members earning additional bonus points.

The experiences at the two properties varied. An unforeseen upgrade to a three-bedroom at Inverness Mews due to maintenance issues, coupled with mismatches in advertised versus actual apartment decor, and an early housekeeping attempt, resulted in a strained stay. In contrast, the Sonder Chelsea Green hotel offered a smoother experience, including early room availability at no extra charge and an added layer of security with key entry codes.

For Marriott Bonvoy loyalists, once Sonder's full integration under Marriott is complete, members will have access to exclusive benefits, such as enhanced room upgrades, late checkout options, and point bonuses based on their elite status.
