Spirit Airlines is set to expand its network by adding Savannah, Georgia, as a new destination this summer, marking its first new city since emerging from bankruptcy last month. Starting August 14, the airline will operate a daily nonstop flight from Newark Liberty International Airport to Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. Additional nonstop flights from Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, and Nashville will commence in October.

Savannah is Spirit's third new destination this year, following Chattanooga and Columbia. This expansion is part of a strategic shift focusing on smaller cities, with flights to key markets offered only on peak travel days. Industry observers have compared this approach to Allegiant Air's model, known for its limited and strategic flight days.

John Kirby, Spirit's vice president of network planning, stated, "We look forward to welcoming our Savannah guests onboard soon and offering them new, elevated travel options with unmatched value to visit exciting destinations across the East Coast and Midwest."

The introduction of Savannah comes amid Spirit's broader operational challenges, including a reduction in seating capacity due to aircraft reductions post-bankruptcy and issues with Pratt & Whitney engines affecting its Airbus A320neo fleet. At the year's end, Spirit had 41 grounded aircraft awaiting inspection.

Spirit's upcoming Savannah flights will add competition to existing routes offered by airlines like Allegiant, Delta, Southwest, and United from this city. Introductory fares from Spirit to Savannah start at $59 one-way.
