José Freig Vice President of International Operations at American Airlines | Official Website

American Airlines has announced its 30th destination in Mexico, making it a leader among U.S.-based airlines in terms of flights, seats, and destinations in the country. The latest addition is Puerto Escondido, located in Oaxaca, with its airport less than five kilometers from the Pacific Ocean.

New flights to Puerto Escondido will commence on December 3, with routes from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport to Puerto Escondido International Airport. Flights will operate on Wednesdays and Sundays using the Embraer E175, managed by American Airlines’ regional partners under the American Eagle brand.

José Freig, Vice President of International Operations at American Airlines, emphasized the strategic importance of this new route, stating, "Puerto Escondido is quickly becoming a top destination for travelers in search of tropical and relaxing getaways, and we are confident that our new service from Dallas-Fort Worth will offer our customers the opportunity to experience a unique part of Mexico."

In December, when the new service to Puerto Escondido starts, the airline plans to have 780 weekly flights from the U.S. to Mexico. Data from Cirium’s Diio Mi airline planning tool shows the airline's weekly flights stand at 778, excluding the newest addition. Cancun International Airport is the most popular destination, with 207 weekly flights from the U.S., followed by Mexico City International Airport, Benito Juárez, with 91 flights.

The majority of these departures to Mexico are from Dallas/Fort Worth, with 400 weekly flights, including those to Puerto Escondido. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Miami International Airport also have significant numbers of flights to Mexico, with 121 and 77 weekly departures, respectively.

Mexico remains the most popular destination for international travel from the U.S., and American Airlines continues to expand its network in the country. Earlier this year, services began to Tampico International Airport, and in 2024, three new destinations were launched: Tijuana International Airport, Tulum International Airport, and Veracruz International Airport.

Additionally, the airline announced its first-ever international flights from Oklahoma City Will Rogers International Airport to Cancun, starting November 8, using Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

Despite an extensive network in Mexico and other Latin American countries, American Airlines' major revenue source remains its domestic network, generating $35.3 billion in revenue in 2024. Revenue from Latin American operations declined slightly from $6.7 billion in 2023 to $6.5 billion in 2024.
