Delta Air Lines has achieved a significant milestone in its sustainability roadmap by accomplishing a one percent reduction in fuel burn, equivalent to 45 million gallons of jet fuel, through operational improvements. This achievement marks Delta as the first U.S. airline to reach its near-term fuel savings goal set for 2025. The milestone was reached in the first quarter of 2025, largely due to the efforts of Delta's Carbon Council that works across various divisions to implement strategies for fuel conservation.

The savings of 45 million gallons in jet fuel equate to more than $110 million in annual cost savings for the airline. Key strategies that led to the reduction include minimizing onboard weight, using technology to track and decrease auxiliary power unit (APU) usage, optimizing aircraft speed and routes, certifying new landing procedures, and integrating drag reduction technology into the fleet.

Delta aims to promote sustainability throughout the organization by embedding operational fuel-efficiency key performance indicators (KPIs) and engaging employees in these initiatives. "65 percent of Delta people are in a position daily to directly contribute to our operational KPIs for reducing fuel usage, improving fuel efficiency and driving millions of dollars in cost savings each year that, in turn, contribute to ," stated Jesse Miers, Director of Delta's Carbon Council.

Delta's Carbon Council is integral in driving initiatives within the airline, such as the enhanced foam engine wash achieved through a partnership with AeroCore Technologies. This foam wash method improves engine performance by effectively removing dirt and reduces fuel consumption. Additionally, Boeing's reduced flaps landing procedures on specific fleets contribute to fuel burn reduction, while winglet enhancements and lightweight landing gear continuously improve aircraft efficiency.

APU run-time reduction is another area where the Carbon Council is focusing, as each minute of APU operation significantly impacts fuel consumption. Reducing APU usage can result in substantial fuel savings for Delta.

The initiatives undertaken by Delta's Carbon Council form part of a broader effort to achieve environmental sustainability goals and industry collaboration. The airline plans to continue innovating and working towards greater fuel efficiencies.
