Chase has announced changes to its United Explorer Card, sparking mixed reactions among credit card users. A common concern when credit cards undergo updates involves increased annual fees, often paired with additional benefits to counterbalance the costs. Users of the United℠ Explorer Card, previously attracted by its simple benefits and low annual fee, were apprehensive about the refresh.

The refreshed United Explorer Card indeed comes with a higher annual fee, but Chase has introduced new benefits to offset this. Among the retained perks, which were a relief to cardholders, are the two United Club passes received each year and a free checked bag for the first flight—a significant draw for those who rely on this access, especially at airports like Portland International where lounge options are limited. "My biggest fear with the United Explorer's refresh was that Chase would limit or remove these benefits," expressed one cardholder, relieved these perks remain.

Chase has also added new features that may appeal to urban users without cars. Cardholders now receive up to $60 annually in ride-hailing service credits, requiring annual enrollment. This benefit provides a $5 monthly statement credit, with no limitation to a specific service like Lyft, offering flexibility in usage. Additionally, the card includes $120 annually in credits for Instacart purchases, distributed in monthly increments up to $10, with a complimentary three-month Instacart+ membership available.

The changes to the United Explorer Card have been evaluated based on individual needs and usage patterns. Some cardholders, who frequently utilize these specific benefits, find value exceeding the card’s new annual fee and welcome the refresh. As one user calculated, "I'll net $368 in value from this card each year, $218 more than its annual fee."

Ultimately, while the card remains valuable for frequent United or Star Alliance flyers, those less inclined to use lounges, fly, or use ride-hailing services may not find similar value. Users are encouraged to review updated terms to determine the card’s suitability for their personal financial strategy.
