Air India has announced on the social media platform X that it is promoting DigiYatra for contactless travel on domestic flights. This initiative aims to offer passengers a seamless, paperless journey across India's airports.

DigiYatra is a government-led initiative by India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation designed to provide a seamless, paperless airport experience through facial recognition technology. The system uses a single biometric token to validate a passenger's identity, travel, and health data, enabling contactless processing at various checkpoints. According to the DigiYatra Foundation, this approach aims to enhance security while reducing wait times and congestion at airports.

As of September 2024, DigiYatra is operational at 14 major airports across India, including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Kolkata, Varanasi, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Guwahati, Jaipur, Pune, Kochi, and Chennai. These airports handle a significant portion of India’s air traffic, facilitating broader adoption of contactless travel. The expansion reflects the government’s commitment to modernizing airport infrastructure and enhancing passenger convenience.

To use DigiYatra, passengers must download the DigiYatra app and register by linking their Aadhaar credentials via DigiLocker or directly using their Aadhaar number. The registration process involves capturing a clear selfie validated against Aadhaar data to create a biometric profile. This profile allows passengers to access various airport services without physical documents, streamlining check-in and boarding.
