Federal Express Corporation (FedEx) has partnered with Hands On Tokyo, a local non-profit organization, to address environmental concerns related to litter accumulation on waterfronts and ocean plastic pollution in Tokyo. Approximately 50 kilograms of trash were collected by FedEx volunteers along the Arakawa riverbank. This effort aims to prevent waste from entering waterways and contributes to a cleaner and healthier ecosystem.

FedEx emphasizes its commitment to environmental protection through initiatives like this cleanup effort. The company promotes environmental stewardship as a core value and encourages employees to participate in community service activities.

“At FedEx, we believe that the long-term prosperity of our business depends on the health of the environment,” said Kei Alan Kubota, managing director of FedEx Japan. “In addition to embracing sustainability initiatives in our operations, such as the use of reusable packaging, electric vehicles ( EVs) to reduce emissions, and alternative biodiesel for existing vehicles, we continually seek out ways to care for the environment and support local communities. This clean-up activity demonstrates our employees’ passion and commitment to fostering sustainable communities.”

Plastic waste is a growing concern, with predictions that by 2050, marine plastic weight could surpass that of fish. In FY2023, Japan reportedly discharged 27,000 tons of plastic waste into the ocean. Research also indicates that individuals consume about five grams of plastic weekly. To combat this issue, the Japanese government has outlined a goal to eliminate marine plastic pollution by 2050.

The collaboration with Hands On Tokyo is included under the FedEx Cares program, which encourages workers to engage in volunteer projects. FedEx has consistently taken part in community clean-up activities across Japan, with employees previously collecting 525 kilograms of litter from beaches, parks, roads, and riverbanks in various locations.
